Through this photo walk, the kids wanted to show a little more about their community, specifically, those areas where they feel the most safe. All photos were taken by their classmates.
Anuj is shown with his young cousin, who follows him around everywhere he goes. Here they are at a local store, where they often buy small snacks and household items.
Dhanisha is sitting here on the steps by the local doctor’s office. Healthcare in Delhi is often hard to access, as public hospitals are far away and overcrowded and private hospitals are too expensive. For small illnesses, the kids and their family come to local clinics to get basic treatment and medicines.
Kajal snapped this photo while we were roaming around in the alleys of the community. This is a husband and wife fighting over something – we aren’t sure what! Because their community is so crowded, the kids are often exposed to fights between neighbors and other nuisances. It’s particularly a problem when the kids are trying to study for exams and there is so much noise!
Here Karan is posing with a motorbike in the alley where he lives.
Many of the kids have big families, and most of their families live in the community with them as well. This is Khushboo posing with a relative. You can notice the woman’s red line in her hair – that is called a sindoor and it is a sign that the woman is married.
Kunal is posing in front of his TV, in his house. Most of the kids live in a one-bedroom house which their whole immediate family shares. Watching TV is a favorite past-time of all the kids.
This is Ravi’s mom, sitting in the door of their house. She is stitching jeans, like most of the women in the community do to earn extra money for their families.
Savita and Khushboo are standing in front of a cycle rickshaw, which is like a bike with a seat on the back. It is a popular way to travel short distances. A few of their fathers drive these cycle rickshaws as a job.
Shatrughan is here on the roof of a friend’s house. Roofs are often used as a place to hang out, relax and enjoy the sun. The kids also like to fly kites from their roofs.
Sunaina is shown here in a colorful corner of the street where she lives. Like many of the other kids, she feels safest in the areas close to her house, because that is where most of her family lives.
Vibha is posing in front of another shop in the community. She buys snacks and household items from this shop. Since most of the community is from the same state in India (Bihar) it helps to build a common culture for everyone, even in Delhi.
Next week, in class, the kids will be getting back to the story and layout of their comic book! We look forward to sharing the progress of that – and their responses to the ConneXions photos ASAP! In the meantime, we have one fun photo to share: the girls were so inspired by Damion’s photo of him jumping off the wall, they did their own version!
