Hi ConneXions!
KPM and the Bachchon ki Duniya Club have officially started shooting their comic book!
On Wednesday, the class split into three groups – each with a specific task. The first group consisted of Kajal, Anuj, Kunal, Dhanisha and Karan – they were the actors for the day’s shooting – and we managed to shoot two scenes of the book with them.
The second group had Vibha, Savita, Anuradha and Big Khushboo. They were in charge of the Behind the Scenes – they took all of the photos below to show a little bit about the shooting process.
Karan plays the father in the story – he catches his kids being bullies to some younger kids and shouts at them!
These are the three bullies in the story.
Here the actors are laughing during shooting.
Dhanisha (on the right) plays the bullies’ mom in the story.
The last group had a special assignment. Since you all were so interested in some of the details about their community and their lives (like the food they eat!) we decided to send the Special Assignment team out to take pictures of food! Ravi, Mala, Neha and Sunaina took the below photos to give you guys a better idea of what they eat.
Sometimes people drink their chai with biscuits like these ones.
People normally drink chai (hot, milky tea) more than 5 times a day.
This is chapati (or roti) and is a flat, round bread like a tortilla. Either chapati or rice is served with almost every meal.
In India, many people are vegetarian, but not all of them. Our kids love to eat chicken. Their parents buy it fresh (and live!) from the market and cook it at home.
This is a general store owned by one of our students’ uncle. He sells biscuits, snacks, and other everyday household items.
Omelets are a favorite snack for the kids. There are special omelet shops in the community which get large quantities of eggs delivered by bikes, like this one.
Close to the kids’ neighborhood is a fish market. Their parents often make fish as a special meal. They buy the fish, get it cleaned at the shop, and cook it at home.
This woman just came back from grocery shopping. In one bag she has califlower – it is a popular vegetable in India.
Ice Cream!!!
This is a snack called Jhal Muri – it is similar to rice krispies but it is mixed with spices.
This woman makes “pakoras” which are basically fried snacks. There are many different types of pakoras: bread pakoras (fried bread), onion pakoras (like onion rings), chilli pakoras (fried chilli), etc.
This guy roams around the community and other neighborhoods close-by selling all kinds of snacks like peanuts for example.
This is a price list written on the wall of a local restaurant. They serve many different dishes and usually working men will eat there between their jobs.
This guy travels around carrying this contraption – in each tin is a different ingredient. You can choose what ingredients you want and he will mix them together for you and add special spices and flavors.
This is a local sweet shop. Our kids are crazy about sweets! Each part of India has many distinct sweets and our kid particularly like the Bihari ones. When they go back to their villages to visit, they usually bring back special Bihari sweets to share with the class.
As you can see from the photos, the kids and their families don’t shop from supermarkets or malls. Both exist in Delhi, but they are normally very fancy and very expensive. Instead, in most communities, there are specialized local stores to get whatever food you need. Sometimes you will have to go to 3 or more different shops to get all the ingredients for one meal.
The mothers normally do all the cooking – and most of our kids’ moms stay at home to work there and take care of all the household chores. Men almost never cook!

The next two Wednesdays are holidays – so we will continue the comic book shooting when we come back to class in January. Stay tuned – each day of shooting will have a special assignment along with the Behind the Scenes and acting to share with you all.
Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year ConneXions!
